Judge Bars Copyright Owners From Suing Google’s YouTube As Group

“A U.S. judge on Wednesday denied class-action status to copyright owners suing Google Inc over the use of material posted on YouTube without their permission.  U.S. District Judge Louis Stanton in Manhattan denied a motion to certify a worldwide class of copyright owners in a long-running lawsuit over videos and music posted to the popular website.”

Viacom, YouTube Spar Again Over Billion Dollar Copyright Lawsuit

“The Second Circuit overturned the lower court’s decision to throw out Viacom’s billion dollar claims that YouTube hosted copyright infringing material. In doing so, the appeals court agreed with much of what YouTube had to say about the high threshold of knowledge of infringements before ISPs are required to expeditiously remove material, but also determined that the federal judge hadn’t properly considered whether YouTube may have had actual knowledge of specific infringing clips or whether YouTube might have essentially willfully blinded itself from having that knowledge.”

YouTube Changes Its Content ID Appeals Process

“YouTube today announced that it is making some important changes to its appeals process for users who think their videos were falsely flagged for copyright infringements by YouTube’s Content ID system. Previously, when users filed an appeal and the copyright owner rejected this appeal, the user was generally left without any recourse for certain types of Content ID claims. Starting today, copyright holders will get two options to handle appeals after a rejected dispute: release the claim or file a formal DMCA notification.”

Lawsuit: Google Stole Sharing Idea for Hangouts and YouTube

“In a lawsuit filed in San Jose, CamUp is accusing the search giant of copyright infringement and trade secret misappropriation over a ‘watch with your friends’ button for videos … According to CamUp, Google VP Marissa Mayer and company engineers approached the start-up during the South by Southwest Festival in Texas in March of 2011. “Google are threatening action against one of the web’s largest YouTube conversion sites. The site, which according to Google’s own stats is pulling in 1.3 million visitors every day, extracts MP3 audio from YouTube videos and makes it available for users to download. YouTube is without doubt the biggest free resource of videos and music available online today. It can be enjoyed on the site itself, embedded in any webpage, or accessed via YouTube’s Application Programming Interface This API, as it’s better known, provides web developers with access to certain YouTube features, but like many free gifts it comes with certain strings attached, aka the YouTube Terms of Service (ToS).”

YouTube loses court battle over music clips

“A court in Hamburg ruled that YouTube is responsible for the content that users post to the video sharing site. It wants the video site to install filters that spot when users try to post music clips whose rights are held by royalty collection group, Gema. The German industry group said in court that YouTube had not done enough to stop copyrighted clips being posted.YouTube said it took no responsibility for what users did, but responded when told of copyright violations.”

MGM Deal Brings 600 New Rental Titles To Google/YouTube

“Google has signed a deal to bring more than 600 new rental titles from the MGM movie studio to YouTube and Google Play, the company announced Monday in a blog post. YouTube began offering movie rentals through a dedicated store front in April 2010. Since that time, it has signed deals with studios to keep adding to the library of rentals. Google Play, a newly created media hub that combines many of Google’s media services, adds to part of Google’s media strategy in covering the mobile side of things. With MGM in the mix, both YouTube and Play will have even more options.”

YouTube Lets Creators Solicit Donations For Kickstarter & Indiegogo Projects

“Google is announcing … that YouTube creators can now link their videos to projects on Kickstarter and Indiegogo. The company says that these crowd-sourced fundraising platforms were already being used by many YouTube creators, so it wanted to make it easier for those folks to connect their YouTube viewers to their project’s page. The new links will be supported by YouTube’s annotations feature, says Google.”
